In 1936, Charles and Myrtle White, and sons Bob and Ken, opened
Whites Restaurant at 1138 Commercial St. SE. in Salem,
Oregon. Many of the White family contributed to its growth and
popularity. In 1946, Charles and Myrtle retired, and son Bob
and his wife, Carole, took over. Their standard: "The customers
satisfaction and service are always the Number One priority."
Adhering to that standard everyday since 1936 has led to a large
clientele and many, many friends.Bob retired in 1986 on the
50th anniversary of the restaurant. His wife Carole took over.
They were the last owners that would bear the family name.
One morning in 1995, Bob and Carole White were having breakfast
in a little diner on the other side of town. The owner so impressed
them with his cooking and friendliness that Bob said to his
wife, "I can see that man running my grills."
After a great deal of planning and preparation, Don Uselman
opened Whites Restaurant as the owner and operator. Don
not only brought his family to Whites, he also brought
a benevolent heart. One of the unique things that Don has instituted
at Whites recurs every third Saturday of each month. It
is a dinner for HOST (Homes Offering Shelter for Teens), a program
sponsored by Northwest Human Services. Whites Restaurant
donates 70% of sales and 100% of tips, donations, and raffle
tickets to this cause. It is a very good restaurant, yes, and
a little more. Good food and people who make a difference with
their lives.Don Uselman is doing a good job of carrying on the
tradition.
